Creative Kernow Associates x New Creatives Cornwall: Visual Art Group Mentoring

We are excited to run three mentoring groups for new creatives at the beginning of their careers through the New Creatives Cornwall project between October 2024 and February 2025. This open call is for practicing visual artists who would like to develop their practice with the support of the group mentor Field Notes.

About Field Notes
Founded by Rosie Allen and Cat Bagg in 2014, Field Notes CIC is an itinerant arts organisation based in Cornwall. Field Notes initiates, develops and produces its own exhibitions, art festivals, and commissioning programmes that reflect and respond to communities. It also acts as a production agency for artists and organisations looking to realise ambitious visual art projects that align with Field Notes mission to deliver high quality, critically engaged art in, for and with regional and rural communities. Artists are at the heart of all Field Notes projects, which often include early career opportunities, Cat and Rosie offer mentorship and support to those looking to develop their practice and have previously run support networks for Cultivator, Back Lane West and Penryn Art Festival.
What Does This Offer?
This mentoring opportunity aims to support and guide those at the beginning of establishing a professional visual art practice in developing their practice and career. Over the four-month mentoring period, Field Notes will offer at least one one-to-one and three group sessions, tailored to the group of artists selected.
There are 5 places on this mentoring scheme. Areas for mentoring support could include:
- Developing and sustaining a practice, with or without a studio;
- Curatorial guidance specific to your work;
- Building experience by self organising and collaborating with your peers;
- Developing a public presence, considering the content you share on your website and social media;
- Finding and applying for appropriate briefs, opportunities and grant funding.
The mentoring programme is fully-funded and there is no cost for the selected mentees to be part of the programme with travel costs to attend any in-person meet-up will also be covered. The mentees will also benefit from a 1-year free membership with Creative Kernow Associates.
Who Is This For?
To be eligible to apply for this opportunity, you must be based in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and be within the first 2 years of your practice as a visual artist. Although this opportunity is open to artists of any age, due to the requirements of our funder, priority will be given to artists who are under 30.
You do not need to have a formal higher education qualification to apply.

Selection
Mentees will be selected based on:
- Suitability of your practice to the opportunity;
- The impact this opportunity may have on you and your practice;
- The coherence of the cohort.
