I am delighted to share that I have received a research grant supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England for my new project, Borrowed Water – Hidden Traces.
This research investigates the presence of nanoplastic and microplastic pollution, exploring artwork as an index of environmental contamination. Inspired by J.M.W. Turner (1775–1851), I will retrace waterways in southwest England and Venice to examine how invisible contemporary environmental pollutants can be translated through and into artistic practice.
By combining field research with FTIR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, the project will analyse whether water samples, pigments, and paper can capture and retain microscopic contaminants—making the invisible traces of modern pollution perceptible through painting.
