Unveiling the Danesfield Challenge Cup by Abigail Brown at Henley Royal Regatta

The Danesfield Challenge Cup is a celebration of history, craftsmanship and the remarkable journey towards greater parity at Henley Royal Regatta. Inspired by Danesfield House, a site occupied since the Mesolithic period and built upon an Iron Age hill fort believed to have been a stronghold of the Catuvellauni, the trophy draws deeply on the site’s ancient past.
Designed and created by silversmith Abigail Brown, based near Falmouth in Cornwall, the trophy brings together archaeology, Celtic heritage and contemporary craftsmanship. A bronze spearhead discovered during the rebuilding of Danesfield House in 1901 became the central motif, appearing four times around the cup. It represents both the warrior spirit of the women competing for the trophy and the movement of a rowing boat through water. Bow waves and swirling patterns inspired by Celtic La Tène metalwork, including the Battersea Shield, flow around the vessel, reflecting the movement and energy of rowing.
Abigail created the intricate surface using traditional chasing techniques, carefully working the silver by hand to the flowing, textured details.
The trophy was unveiled alongside Henley Royal Regatta’s historic collection of trophies, before being awarded to Molesey Boat Club, the first winners of the Danesfield Challenge Cup.
